Today we presented our speech in groups. Each group had to perform there speech while the other people collaboratively voted on how our speech was. Evelyn, Nazella, Cj, and Kelvin had to vote on how my speech was while I was saying it to them. I liked say my speech this way because I was really nervous and I couldn't really say it in front of the whole class if we had to do it like that. I think I did a great job on my speech but I needed to make eye contact with my audience. Here is my speech.
Good morning / afternoon teachers and students. Should we believe everything we see online? I am here to convince you to not believe everything we see, even if it looks interesting. I chose this topic because lots of people suicide themselves or change the way they look because they think everything is true.
As Abraham Lincoln once said “ Don't believe everything on the internet “ which means just because there are a bunch of facts on a website, it doesn't make it true. Have you ever clicked on a website and it takes you to a page that says take this survey to earn money? Have you ever got taken to a page which tells you to fill out credit card details? Well some of it is fake. 98% of the americans don’t believe everything online. I’m going to persuade you to not believe everything online. Here are some reason on why to not believe everything you see online.
First of all on social media. Social media is very popular around the world and about 1.73 billion go on social media everyday. Most people don't think about what they post, who they add or who they accept to see their page. About 40% of people get hurt online either because they don't know about these stuff or they are just not careful while online. Some of the websites may be true but still, we shouldn’t believe everything online just because it was on the internet. We really need to be careful around websites.We don’t really know the person behind the profile picture. Marcus Aurelius says everything we hear is an opinion not a fact, everything we see is a perspective not the truth. Social media can affect other people in certain ways like it can be a small problem and turn into a big problem or it could even cause suicide.
Second of all on T.V. There are so many programs there that influence us to be like that person or changes the way we act, look or changes the prices of things. For example if a famous person uses something the prices will be higher even though it was cheaper. Many channels have a lot of swear words and from there we pick up those words or we copy the words they use. Like if a celebrity uses a cooler word for mum they start using that word instead of the word mum. By just watching T.V we copy,behave, and make some bad choices by watching the people we want to be like. We shouldn't have to copy a celebrity because you want to look cool. Oscar Wilde says be yourself cause everyone is already taken.
There are so many things that make us believe that is true or influences us to be like that person. Do you still believe everything online? Your actions can affect others in certain ways. You might think it’s a joke but the other person might take it seriously. Even if we download something it might cause a virus. Don't believe everything you see. I bet you have heard that quote lots of time. My point is we can't believe everything we see online because it has a picture and some facts. Be proud of who you are and don't let anyone else try to change you. Don't trust everything you see. Even salt looks like sugar. Don’t let your ears hear what your eyes didn’t see and don’t let your mouth say what your heart doesn't feel. Thank You for listening to my speech.
