Library Visit

Today the librarians for Panmure Bridge School went down to the Panmure local library to see how they run things and how it is different to a normal school library. When we first got there, they told us some of the things the do and what types of job there are in a library. Once we finished that, we had a little tour of the library. My favourite part of the tour was when the lady ( Anita ) showed us upstairs where they had 2 lounges and how sometimes they would have a movie time. The next task was to order the books and use the skills we learnt. I really liked using the scanner because there was a little mat which we just put the book on and it will scan it for you. We also had to give them some ideas of some activities to do for the summer reading challenge. Once that was all done we had morning tea provided for us and it was time to go. I really enjoyed learning about what they do at a local library and what types of jobs they do.

Speech Marks

Our focus in writing today was to understand how to use and punctuate dialogue. Followed by creating a DLO that helps others learn exciting ways of using dialogue in writing. I worked with Mia, We had to add examples followed by clip art images , 8 synonyms with the word said and explain how to use it. I found a video that can help others use speech marks correctly. I enjoyed working collaboratively with Nesi because we came up with some really good ideas.

Reading Online Challenges

Today we had to play some online reading challenges. For these games we were practicing most of our reading skills, like inferencing, synthesizing , questioning, making connections, and visualizing. All of these games were really helpful because it made me think about all the skills I have learnt this year.

Hyperbole

This Week we have been learning about Hyperbole. Hyperbole is pronounced as Hi - per - buh - li. Hyperbole is used to create affect in our stories and not make them boring, you also exaggerate to make it more interesting but is not meant to be taken seriously. One example is I'm so hungry I could eat a horse. By this phrase they meant that they are really hungry they could eat lots of food.

Recount Quiz

For today's reading task we had to explore the clusters website and find some example of some really good recounts. I had a quick search on all the websites and found a really good one. I  then had to put the link of that writing and tell why I enjoyed that piece of writing. When I finished that, I filled out an quiz about some of the features of a recount. We were doing this to re think of an narrative since we hadn't done this topic in a long time. Some of the questions that were on this quiz was , ( In Which present would write a recount in or What tenses are recounts written in and excetra. I got 2 wrong which mean I need to work more on that.

The Dodo bird

For the last week LS2 had to do there own little mini inquiry. We first had to pick a letter from the alphabet and had to choose some topics that fitted under that letter. My letter was D, I picked a Dodo bird which was a flightless extinct bird. I had to use the sites that we learnt from Mrs Ogilvy and use 3 different sources. I really enjoyed this task because we got to choose a topic that we are interested in.

Reading

For reading we were playing a game which helped us look for the main idea. For this game we had to read a short passage , look for the main idea and then drag it into a paper. After we done that, we would have more passages and had to look for more main ideas. I think, by playing this game it really made me think about the question and look for the main idea. I found this game really fun and helpful.

Touch Rugby

Today was our second session of touch rugby. We first started off with some running warmups and then got into some team excersizes.  In my group we had to tap the ball with our feet and run to the second set of cones and place the ball down and run to the other side. We kept doing team exercises as a group so we could work together. Then we split into 2 groups boys and girls,  the boys went to play a game while the girls worked over on the field with Trevor and learnt some new strategies.  Then we swapped over. I really enjoyed playing Touch with Trevor and Mr M.

How to narrow your research

Last week Mrs Ogilvy taught the year 8's and some year 7's some research skills we then had to come back and teach the year 7's the learning we did. We then learnt as a class some research skills and had to create a DLO on how we could remind ourselves on how to narrow our research. We were learning how to narrow our research. Some steps I learnt how to do was use keywords instead of using the full question. I learnt some really interesting ways on how to narrow my research.

Cyber Safe with Mrs Ogilvy

Today Mrs Ogilvy came from the National library to talk to the year 8's about cyber safe. Mrs Ogilvy was the partner of the teacher in LS1. She taught us some really interesting ways on how to search faster. She talked to us about using key words and how google is not a machine so it can't understand everything you are typing or wanting. The next thing she taught us was  how we can rely on the internet. We used the C.R.A.A.P test to help us out on this. She also showed us two very helpful websites that we could use instead of google. These 2 websites were really helpful as we don't have to attribute the image. The 2 websites were Kids info bits, and Britannica. We then had to come back and teach the Year 7's what we had learnt at cyber safe in the library. I really enjoyed this as we got to learn some new tricks and some new websites.

Reading Challenge

For the past few days for reading we had to work collaboratively as a group to complete the task. First, our teacher told us nothing, instead of saying anything she wrote what she needed to say on her laptop, from there we worked as a group to figure out what to do. We first had to read a big book as a group and write what happened in the story in exact 25 words. Our next task was to fill in the blanks for these 2 other stories, the first one we got was slightly easy but the second one was slightly harder because it used harder words and it had an longer story. As we worked as a group we got the task finished and filled in all the gaps by trying it. We had to follow the instructions and understand the meaning of the story. We were learning to skim and scan so we could find the word that best fitted in the gap. I really enjoyed this task as we had to follow the instruction because it was an different way of doing the activity. Our learning intention was to follow instruction and making sure we had to read for meaning and understanding.

Rhythm Interactive

Today we had rhythm interactive with Johnny and Lucy. They came from all over the world to teach kids and adults from all ages to play the drum. They told us that actions speak louder than words. Everyone got to play on there own drum so everyone got to experience the drum personally. We first had to copy the rhythm Johnny and Lucy was playing and had to use our palm and finger tips to control the sound. Lots of us, really enjoyed this session because each of us got a drum to play on which meant we didn't have to share it around. Teachers also got a drum to play on. Johnny and Lucy did not speak through out the whole session because they wanted us to learn that actions speak louder than words. Everybody really enjoyed Rhythm interactive.

Hydration & Dehydration

Starting from this week Panmure Bridge School had to come with water to school to keep hydrated. My partner and I created an DLO on why it is important for kids in school to drink water and to see what the difference is between hydration and dehydration. I learnt that hydration is when you have enough water in your body to keep you healthy and clean and dehydration is when your body doesn't have the right amount of water which causes headaches, makes you dizzy, feel moody or just in a angry/lazy mood. It is important for school to have water because we need to stay hydrated so we can focus on our school work.

Quizizz

Today LS2 was playing Quizizz. Quizizz is a maths website where you have a competition between your class mates. We had to pair up in partners so we could work together. For this website the teachers have to create a quiz and we complete it in an amount of time. We were practicing our times tables. I was practicing my basic facts a swell because I wanted to get faster and faster. For the first round I came 7th as I kept on playing I came 5th and for the last round I improved so much that I cam e3rd. I paired up with Silivia. This is a fun way to practice your times tables, fractions, decimals, timetables and excetra. I learnt how to do some of my 9x because of this game. I really think this can help me with my maths, because I can remember my basic facts and helps me remember all my times tables.

Library Visit

On Friday the senior school from Panmure Bridge School went down to the library to meet a narrator that reads Andy Griffins books. Everyone got hooked in for what he was saying because  he had an funny entrance when he came in. I also got hooked in because he used lots of expression which made us all want to listen. He was talking to us about how he became a narrator and how reading made him become an actor. We played an warm up game which was called sausages. The aim of this game was to say sausages to everything he said. He also told us that we could use the borrow box which is a website where you could borrow books from the local library for free.

Word Study Challenge

Today I completed a word study challenge. I had to read an article  and find 3 interesting words and write the meaning , a picture to show the words meaning, the interesting word in a sentence, and a synonym. I read 3 article and these were the words I found out. The most interesting word I found out was stench. It means  a very strong unpleasant smell.

Decimals - Maths

Today for maths we were learning how to recognize decimals and how to order decimals. We were recognizing decimals by using fractions to help us. ( e.g : 0.5 would be 5/10 in a fraction ) We practiced ordering decimals on a online worksheet which we had to read the question and solve it out in our maths book. I was also learning the places for the decimals. I really liked learning about decimals because I was learning something new and it links to fractions which could also help me with fractions.   e.g : 5/10 will be 0.5 as in a decimal because the 5 means 5 tens.

Read Theory

Today, I went on Read theory as part of my read 20. For this website they give you some short and long stories and we have to answer the question. You can also view what grade you are and how many points you have at the moment. Here are some screenshots of my progress on Read Theory. This website helps you understand the text and helps you answer the questions correctly.

Sketch - Note

This week we got introduced to sketch note. We did sketch note because it helps us understand the learning because we are writing it in our own words and writing it how we want to. When doing a sketch note, we can use anything including, bullet points, arrows, stick people, block writing, upper case letters mixed with lowercase and many more. For this, you can even use an actual bullet for the bullet points or use stars, circles, triangles, squares or anything. We first tried out sketch note on Monday and did our sketch note about question ( The one in the middle ).  I used picture and words to tell a story about question and why we ask them. Sketch note helps you tell a learning story that helps you understand the facts in your own way instead of writing facts about the subject and no understanding it. My second attempt of sketch note was on Rio De Janeiro .  My other attempt was on Olympic medals.

Run, Jump, Throw

Today I created this DLO which explains on some skills/tips to do high jump. I have compared a picture of me and a picture of an actual athlete doing the high jump to see if I used the same technique as the athlete.   I was also comparing the way she does her high jump to my one to see what I can improve and what I did correctly. Here are some skills I learnt when  I went to Run, Jump, Throw.
