Buddy Reading Week 1

Today we had Buddy reading with the students in Room 4 and 3. We had buddy reading to help the little kids to encourage them to read more often and to pay it forward. My partner was from room 4 and her name was Huiaa. My partner read to me and I read to her. At first my partner was really shy so I asked her some questions about the book like
  1. What is the title of the book?
  2. Who is your favourite character?
  3. Do you have a pet cat?
  4. Did you enjoy this story?
  5. Do you want to read this story again?
  6. What picture did you like the best?
I asked these questions to help my partner not be shy. The book we read together was called butter flies in my stomach. I really enjoyed reading to my partner, and asking her some questions about her book.

Book Character Week

Today ( Thursday ) Panmure Bridge School had a character book week. Each class dressed up as a character from there favourite book. We did this activity to bring the magic of books alive to the little kids so we don't stop learning. Everyone was dressed up including teachers, students and the guest that came from the rotary Pakuranga Club.  I chose to go as a vampire from the book, the spooky house. I chose to go as this character because I enjoyed reading this book over and over. My teachers got dressed up as witches. I think everyone did a great job with there costumes because nearly everyone got dressed. I think this was a great way to bring the magic of books alive to the little juniors.

Advertising

This is a DLO showing what advertisement means in exact 25 words. I worked collaboratively with Tiare, Cyrus, and John.  I learnt that Advertising is when the person selling the product they are targeting a certain group of people. I really enjoyed learning about this.

Rio Olympics

Today we learned how to attribute images. To attribute an image  you need to click on the search tools, click on the usage rights and then click on labeled for reuse. Then, you look for the license for that picture and who it was by and include it under the picture like the ones above. These images that we have used are labeled for reuse we have also have the permission slip to use it. When you are attributing your images it is like saying to the person, thank you for letting me use your picture. It is good to do this step because if you dont do it it is disrespectful and you dont have permission.    For this task I worked with Mia.

Wheel Chair Volley Ball

For this activity we had to create a new sport to play in the Paralympic Games but we had to remember that there were athletes that can't run, walk, hear or see. So for this activity I chose to create a game called Wheel chair volleyball.  To play this sport, they are all on wheel chairs ( right ) but instead of them running for the ball they are on there wheelchair. This game is probably like the normal volley ball but on wheelchairs. The only different thing is that the net is a bit shorter or bigger depending on the sizes of the wheelchair.

Here are 3 rules for this sport:

  1. Each player must me 30cm away from each other.
  2. The person who first  receives the ball in the match must be the leader for the game for that night.
  3. Each time one team scores that will be 5 points.

Raising Money Ideas

Activity 2: It is very expensive for each of the Paralympic athletes to fly from New Zealand to Rio de Janeiro to compete.  Most athletes have to fund-raise in order to make the money that they need to go on the big trip. Recently, Harvey Norman announced that they will be helping to raise funds for the New Zealand Paralympic team. What could you do to help raise funds to support our amazing Paralympic athletes? On your blog, list 2 different ways in which you, your family or friends could raise money to support the athletes.

In the paragraph above it explains what we had to do for the activity. If I had to fundraiser money to help the Paralympic Games I would:

Sell baked or drinks out:
I would make a lemonade stand and sell some lemonade because I have a lemon tree which means I'm not wasting any money on buying stuff to make money. ( Hoped that makes sense ) I would also sell cookies or bread because my family works for a bread company and always give us some so it would be thoughtful to sell some of those. Another thing I would do is do sausage sizzles as a family thing near the fields and that because lots of people get hungry around there.

Offer to do chores for neighbors:
I would ask my neighbors to do some chores around the house ( especially the one that lives nearby because they are getting old ) like washing the dishes, taking the clothes out and hanging on the clothes line, and folding the clothes away. I would also do some gardening because that job is really hard work which means more money.

Here are the things I would do to earn money.

Paralympics Games

Activity 1: At the first ever Paralympic Games in Rome, the athletes competed in eight sports. Cycling was one of them. For the cycling event, two people compete together as a team – one of the people has a disability and the other does not. Here is a picture of a para-cycling team from New Zealand:
C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Paraclycing team (NZ).jpg

At the moment the most famous para-cycling team in New Zealand is comprised of two female athletes – Emma Foy and Laura Thompson. Emma is blind but Laura is not. Together they work as an amazing team. Imagine that you were asked to compete in a tandem cycling event and you had to choose one person to compete with. Who would it be? On your blog, tell us who you would compete with and why.

If I had to choose someone to compete with in the Paralympics I would choose my friend Mahdia because 1st of all we are close friends 2ND we work best together and 3rd because we are really challenging people and we both work hard and show teamwork and team spirit. I also think Mahdia and I would compete together because we push each other to achieve and acomlpish our goals. We also would work best together because we encourage each other and don't look down on any other teams which is really important thing to do when playing any kind of sports. Mahdia and I would be the perfect team because we both know what we will be doing and we will have fun no matter what.

Imaginative Story

Imagine that you are sitting in the crowd at the opening ceremonies for the Rio Olympics this August. The ceremony has just started and all of the Olympic athletes are parading around the stadium in their uniforms when all of a sudden I hear loud screaming and cheering coming from the other side of me. Let me clear my eyes one more time. I was in shock to see Valarie Adams giving out autographs at this time, I mean she doesn't play rugby, does she? My toes crinkled up, my heartbeat shakes, boom boom. I shoved the other people and manged to get an autograph from her, take a picture with her and I was lucky enough to tell her a bit about myself. Is this a dream? Is this really happening? WOW! The crowd just got louder and louder. I jump on my chair and start screaming with excitement with the crowd. This is the best day ever, I will never loose this picture. I wonder if I can still catch her to sign my shirt?

In the paragraph above, I had to finish of the sentence from Imagine that you are sitting in the crowd at the opening ceremonies for the Rio Olympics this August. The ceremony has just started and all of the Olympic athletes are parading around the stadium in their uniforms when all of a sudden…
I really enjoyed doing this because I got to be creative but I mean I wish this was real. I really enjoyed doing this activity.

Shaun Johnson

I would choose Shaun Johnson to host the Olympics because he would be a great person for others to look up to. I also think he is a great leader and shows team spirit while playing. I also chose him because I wanted to be different because people choose the person because of how they look. e.g: If your a girl, that girl would choose someone because they are girl. ( I hope that makes sense ). I also chose him because he has been playing rugby for about 2 or 3 years which means he no quitter and he always try his best. He would be the perfect host because most people look up to him ( mostly boys because they like rugby most ) as a leader.

Here was the activity we got given:
In the opening ceremony for the London Olympics there were a number of famous English people including the Queen, the Spice Girls, David Bowie, U2, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney. Imagine that we were going to host the Olympics here in New Zealand in 2024 and you were invited to be on the committee that decides who is invited to participate in the opening ceremonies. As a member of the group you must choose one of the following people to be in the opening ceremony: Richie McCaw (rugby player), Lorde (singer), Kane Williamson (cricket player), Maria Tutaia (netball player), John Key (prime minister of New Zealand) or Shaun Johnson (league player). On your blog, tell us who you think is the best person to choose and explain why you think that they are the best choice!

New Zealand Uniform Rating

C:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Athens Olympics uniform (2004).jpg

I would rate this as my favorite ( #1 ) because the detailing of the uniforms is not too detailed or too simple. I also like this one the best out of these 3 because the design on the uniform looks like a silver fern which is representing our country.  I also like this one best because the choices of colors it really stands out  and most countries dont have black and white.

This would be my second choice because I dont really like the designs on it because it's too simple and it wouldn't really pop out because most countries have something black on there uniform. The only thing I like about this is the layout of it but either than that In think they should add more stuff to the designs.
Out of all the 3 uniforms this would be the last one I would like because it looks old fashioned. I also dont like this one because it looks like these uniforms were from the olden day, plus it looks like nursing outfits ( no offense ).

For this activity there were 3 pictures of  uniforms and we had to pick the one that was the best and the one that was alright and the one that was the worst. I really liked this activity because I got to see what the uniforms were like and I had to choose which one was the best and the one that wasn't.

Richie M caw

Some that inspires me is Richie M caw. He inspires me because he is a great leader and he makes sure everyone in the team has a job. He also is a great leader because he makes his country proud by giving his all and inspires other people to be like him. Richie M caw was know as one of  the top leaders in New Zealand.

For this activity I had to choose someone who inspires me and write why they inspired me. Here is the person I look up to.

Marjorie Gestring

Here is the activity we had to do today: In 1936, a 13 year old girl named Marjorie Gestring became the youngest person to ever win an Olympic gold medal. She won the gold medal in the springboard diving competition. Imagine that you were alive in 1936 and you had the chance to interview her. On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask the Olympic champion (if you had the chance to meet her!). Here will be my 5 question I would ask:
  1. Was it hard for you competing in the Olympics at such a young age.
  2. Was there any other sport you wished to do either than the one you are doing right now.
  3. What was the hardest thing you had to at the Olympics.
  4. Have you ever lost trust in yourself during the Olympics. Why?
  5. What made you want to compete in the Olympics at such a young age.

Eddie the Eagle

In this activity I had to watch the trailer of Eddie the eagle and summarize what it was about. This movie was about a British man ( Eddie ) who dreamed to go to the Olympics but people would tell him that he couldn't do it but he tried and tried. He tried to look for a sport that he could do at the Olympics. He would practice by getting a stick and putting the paint buckets and putting on the ends of the sticks. His father would always tell him he will never go to the Olympics. He never gave up until he said if he cant go to the Olympics then he will go to the winter Olympics. To find out what will happen next you will have to watch the trailer.

What I really like about this movie is that it is based on a true story and it can help inspire others. It can help inspire others but telling them to never give up and keep trying until you get there. I think this is a great movie who has a big dream but people keep telling them they wont be able to do it. I would rate this movie a 10 because it can help others.

#Be the Inspiration

For this activity I had to watch the video above and critique this video. I had to pick out of
* = very bad movie
** = bad movie
*** = okay movie
**** = Good movie
***** = Very good movie
After watching this little video clip I think I will rate this as **** ( good movie ) because of how the narrator in this clip was loud and clear and it matched the video which made me listen to it more. What I didn't like about this clip was that the clip went so slow when I wished it would speak faster and play the pictures and videos faster because I was eager to see what happens but it went to slow. I also liked how they showed some pictures of Rio considering the Olympics are going to be held there.

Andrea Kelly

For this activity there were 3 athletes to choose from. We had to pick one athlete and write a short explanation about them and why we had choose that athlete. I chose to do Andrea Kelly ( the picture at the bottom ) who does Taekwondo.  The reason I picked here out of these 3 people because 1. I wanted to try someone different, 2. I wanted to learn some new things about someone else, 3. because I think it was a very brave sport to do for a girl. I also chose her because I wanted to do Taekwondo so I want to learn a bit about it by choosing her. Andrea Kelly was born in Christchurch and was born in 1982. Andrea Kelly is known as the Taekwondo champion from 2012 to 2014. If you want to find more about her click this:

Lisa Carrington

For this activity I had to choose one person that is participating in the Olympics and had to write a short description and include the athletes name, there sport, and 3 interesting facts about them. For this activity I chose to do Lisa Carrington  because I wanted to choose someone different and someone I didn't really know because I wanted to challenge myself and because most people choose Valerie Adams and so on. Lisa Carrington does canoeing, kayaking, and sprinting in the Olympics. Here are 3 facts about Lisa Carrington:

  1. Lisa Carrington has been unstoppable over the 200m distance since 2011 wining four world championships titles dominating the world cup circuit.
  2. She has got/earned lots of gold medals over the past few years.
  3. She has got a graduate diploma after already earning a bachelor of arts.

Poem about the Rio Olympics

I am really excited
to explore the Olympics of Rio
I can't wait to meet Lydia Ko,
What do I ask her?
What do I tell her?
What do I say?
Is this really what I am going to say
My eyes lit up
My hands skake
My toes wriggle
I bite my lip
Do you know who I just met
I love my job
I love my friends
but I just met someone whos best.
Who will I meet next
will she or he be the best
I dont know lets wait and lets see.

For this activity I had to write a poem on the Olympics. Here is the outcome of my poem. I hope you enjoy it.

Archery

In the picture I ( the one holding the red arrow ) am playing archery with my activity group at camp. I was lucky enough to have a real game of archery at camp. When I picked up the bow and arrow it felt so heavy compared to the ones I play with at home. My fingers got really tired and sore from just holding the handle. I was pretty nervous as it was my first time but later on I just wanted to have more and more tries at it. Me and my friends were having a competition to see who will aim the arrow in the middle of the target. Unfortunately I missed the target by inches but I was still proud of myself at the end for giving things a go. Maybe next time I could take archery lessons ( if thats even a thing ) or keep trying so I can aim at the right place.

Modern Pentathlon

For this activity I had to research a sport from the Olympics that I have never heard of. We then had to write a short explanation of what the sport is and include the name of the sport, the aim of the sport and 2 rules for the sport. The sport I picked was modern pentathlon, some of the words looked familiar but I had no idea what the sport was. In this sport there are 5 activities included. The 5 activities are swimming, fencing, horse riding, and shooting and running. I found this sport really interesting because you get to dot lots of sports in one sport. This sport is played by both men and women. The rules for swimming in this sport is that competitors must race in heats over 200m in freestyle, earning points according to there time.  The rules for horse riding is they compete in a show jumping competition trying to clear 12 obstacles over a 350 - 400m course before the race.

My Logo Design!

For the 2020 Olympics I think this logo would match because it is not too detailed or too simple. For this activity we had to design a logo for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. I am really liking this logo because it has all the right colors and the red person really reminds me of all the kind of sports there are. What I also like about this logo is that when you look at the font it reminds you of the writing font at the sushi stores which is great because the Olympics are going to be held in Japan. I found this activity really cool especially because I could choose and create a logo.

New Zealand Land Marks

In the presentation above tells you some facts about 3 landmarks which were the sky tower, the light house, and the harbor bridge. For this activity it was all about Land Marks. I had to pick 3 New Zealand Land Marks and write some information and write an opinion on why we think it is famous. For this activity I most likely liked learning about the sky tower because it took 3 years to build. Wow! That is a long time to build something. I loved completing all these activities.

Tom and Vinicius - 2 016 Olympics in Rio

Episode 2 Summary:
In episode 2 Vinicius and Tom are looking for a spot to camp in. Vinicius finds this tree log, once he goes in all he finds are all types of creature. Imagine that? Soon Tom finds his spot which is inside a hole in the tree. Then tom realizes that it is not a good spot because they are full of bats that dont really like other people or dont really like sharing. Vinicius and Tom run to each other and bang there heads. They find this bird house and it gives them an idea to make an house for them. They use the tree log and things that surrounded them to help them build it. The part they were waiting for has come. They finished there houses and they went off to sleep. They realize that maybe they just belong to sleep in trees and the Lilly pads in the water.

On the top I have written a summary on Vinicius and Tom episode 2. There were 3 episodes I had to choose from. I chose to do episode 2 because I really enjoyed this one. I also liked this one because it hooked me in so I wanted to watch more of it. For this activity it was all about the mascots. I really enjoy these activities that Rachel creates because I get to see how other people do it and it is totally different. I like to look at other peoples blog because I like to see how they did it compared to my one. Thank you Rachel.

Winter Learning Journey ( Day 1 Activity 3 )

In the olden day girls weren't allowed to participate in the Olympics or even watch it.  That's not fair. Girls should be treated the same as the boys. I mean without girls our world would be so different. I think girls should of participated because if you look at a boy and a girl we are the same, we have a nose, mouth, eye, ear, feet and hands. My point is not all girls are sporty but some girls are. Girls should be accepted as who they are. When people look at a boy they think there strong, smart, active and many more but if they think that why can't they think like that to a girl. How many of have heard this message in the speaker, ( Can we please have some strong boys to do a job ) or something like that. Have you ever just wondered hey that's not fair. Every person should be accepted as who we are because there is only one you. I think girls should be allowed to participate in the Olympics back in the olden days.

Winter Learning Journey ( Day 1 Activity 2 )

In the picture above is a picture of  Milo of  Kroton. Milo of Kroton was one of the famous guys back then  in the ancient Olympics.Milo of Kroton was a wrestler who enjoyed a brilliant wrestler career with many victories in the most important athletic festivals of Greece. He was born in Crotone, Italy and passed away in Crotone. Down below are 3 facts about Milo of Krotone:

  1. Milo of Krotone is a five time wrestling champion from 62nd to 66th in the Olympics.
  2. He was one of the moist legendary athletes in the world and wore the victors crown at the Olympics no less than 6 times.
  3. When he was younger he would show other kids how strong he was so he could look cool, e.g: he would smash a pomegranate with his hands. Some kids found it impossible to bend his fingers. He would show other kids the great things he could do today.

Winter Learning Journey ( Day 1 Activity 1 )

Today the winter learning journey starts. If you don't know what that is, it's a website where you read stories and facts and you you have to do the activity. For each thing you do you earn point. Lots of manakalani schools participate and there will be a top 3 from each school. Those top three people earn a gift basket full of goodies. This terms topic was the Ancient Olympics. Thank you to Rachel for organizing this program as it helps our learning a lot in a fun way.

Activity 1:

If  I was in the Olympics back then I would choose Equestrian races out of  running, wrestling, boxing, pankration,  horse racing and pentathlon. I would choose horse racing because it would mean I'm trying new things, giving things a go, participating in events I don't usually do. Imagine riding a horse? Imagine all the new tricks you can do? I have always wanted to ride a horse , which of course I haven't yet but if I was competing in the Olympics my first choice would we Equestrian races. I also want to do horse races because I could learn new things about it and I could teach other people how to do it.

Life Education

Today was our last session of Life Education. We watched a few clips on how our brain works and some information about being kind and puberty. Did you know that when a baby is born you have 100 billion brain cells which means it links up to stuff? e.g: Learning how to write your name would cover up one brain cell. Did you also know that when babies are born, they are born without knee caps which explains why they can't walk when they are new born. I have learnt some interesting and helpful facts that will help us later on in life. The part I really enjoyed about this session was that we got to meet Harold the Giraffe. Harold was really funny, he told us some jokes and we had to tell him some of the things we learnt for the past 4 sessions. I really enjoyed Life education in the caravan.

Blog Comments

Here are my 2 blog comments to Rupotaka School. In my comments they were positive feedback and some interesting feed back to improve. I really enjoyed looking at Room 12's blog because there pictures on there blog hooked me in to read more. I also liked there blog because I could clearly understand what the blurb said which made things easier.

Dance ( Music )

This term for music our focus was music and dance but for our last sessions we ended with Dance. Our focus for dance was the Chinese colour changing mask and the yin yang sign. We took those 2 things and created a dance using those words or the patterns from the picture we got. We had a choice to work in group or in partners. Most people chose to work in a group to make there dance more effective to others. My group created a dance based on the mask which made our dance very interesting to see. Every single group presented there piece of dance and everyone was really interested and learned some moves off  the other groups to add to there dance piece. Everyone had fun at dance. My favorite part was when every group had something different but some groups had the same moves but just presented it differently.

Young Authors Challenge

In the picture above we all received a certificate from the young authors challenge. We all had to write a story with an inspiring message to other kids. The people who ran this program donate the money to the star ship hospital. If you want to read my story it is on my blog from before called the Old Cottage.

Certificate

On Friday Pote and I received a certificate for thinking like a researcher. I was so proud of myself because my goal was to concentrate in school. I was also really proud because this was my 2nd certificate for this term.

Leader Ship (Spark Company)

On Thursday Lyn from the spark company came to talk to us about Leader ship and our future dreams. She first gave us a piece of paper and told us to write who was our leader we look up to and who we want to be or become. My leader was my parents because they care for me, love me, take care of me and care for me about my education. The second task we did was what our dream was or how could New Zealand be a better country. My dream was to focus on my education and get high marks to help me get a better job in the future. Everyone really enjoyed there time and sharing there dream with the other people around them. Lyn introduced herself and told us how she became a worker for the spark company. After that, Lyn gave us some gift bag that everyone was really thankful for. Everyone was really excited to receive an spark bag, a cap, a water bottle, a pen and last of all a note book. On behalf of LS2 we were all very thankful and excited to receive these items.

Orienteering

Today Learning space 2 had there last session for orienteering. It was very cold and very muddy but everyone still enjoyed there time. The instructors gave us 2 maps and we had to read it from there. I think I am really improving for orienteering because I can read the map directly and know the symbols. I chose to work with a partner because I wanted to help out each other and work together so we can finish at a faster time. I worked with Sajiha. My partner and I probably came 10th because we worked together and showed team spirit while looking for the letters. I think for the past few sessions everyone learnt how to read the map, read the symbols, and no how to do orienteering. I think everyone showed team spirit and worked hard.

Peter Jackson

This is a DLO on Peter Jackson. In this DLO you will find out some information about him and some of the cool movies he produced. One fact I learnt about Peter Jackson was that Peter Jackson was 5 feet and 6 inches tall.

Swimming Paragraph

In the picture above it shows a paragraph on how to stay safe around water or in water. I think these skills or information is really important because lots of people drown in water because they dont know how to swim or they don't know the rules. It is extremely important for us New Zealand kids because we are surrounded by water and we need to keep ourselfs safe.

Life Education

The life education van gave us some booklets to help us with the learning that we have learnt from the past few sessions. Today we learnt about making the right choices, our health, feelings, and emotions. I think it is important to make the right choice because if we choose to make the bad choice there are always a consequence for that. We also learnt how to deal with pea pressure. Pea pressure is when someone forces or tries to make you do that specific thing. Like if I had to go straight home and my friend convinces me to go to the pools and tries forcing me to go there that would be Pea Pressure. In the photo above we were completing our booklet activities. In this booklet it has really fun activities that you can learn from and have fin at the same time.

Comprehension Games

Today I practiced my comprehension games once again. I really find this website helpful because my reading improves every time I go on this.  I think this really can help you with any reading skills.
